Unani medicine originated in the Greek province of Yunnan. This method of natural treatment has been practiced for about 3,500 years. Today, this treatment method has gained wide acceptance worldwide and is expanding rapidly. Currently, herbal medicines are prepared using the latest scientific methods. As these drugs are cheap, readily available and have no side effects, people are taking them eagerly. These natural medicines are very popular. Nowadays, along with herbal medicine, herbal cosmetics are also becoming very popular. By producing quality medicines and cosmetics we can earn a lot of foreign exchange by exporting them to foreign countries besides our own consumption. The government has also taken extensive initiatives in this regard. On the occasion of National Health Week-2019, the Hon'ble Prime Minister has directed to ensure healthcare for all through integrated initiatives of herbal, unani, ayurvedic and homeopathic treatment systems. We are determined to develop an integrated medical system with emphasis on the direction of the Hon'ble Prime Minister.
Rawshan Jahan Eastern Medical College and Hospital (Unani), Lakshmipur has been working tirelessly to develop this system of Unani Medicine and produce skilled doctors. A doctor is the place of trust of a sick person. Our main aim is to create good doctors for the welfare of people. The education that transforms people into human beings, into ideal human beings is the real education. Our vow is to create ideal people through education. We are working tirelessly to ensure that our students are well educated and can work for the welfare of people and humanity. “একটি সুস্থ মন একটি সুস্থ শরীর” এই নীতির আলোকে ২০০৮ সালে ল²ীপুর জেলার দক্ষিণ মাগুরিতে ড. হাকীম মোঃ ইউছুফ হারুন ভূঁইয়া রওশন জাহান ইস্টার্ন মেডিকেল কলেজ ও হাসপাতাল (ইউনানী) প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। কলেজটি ২০০৮-২০০৯ শিক্ষাবর্ষ থেকে বাংলাদেশ বোর্ড অব ইউনানী এন্ড আয়ুর্বেদিক সিস্টেম্স অব মেডিসিনের অধীনে ইউনানী চিকিৎসায় ছয় মাসের ইন্টার্নসহ সাড়ে চার বছর মেয়াদী ডিপ্লোমা প্রোগ্রাম পরিচালনা শুরু করে। ২২ ডিসেম্বর ২০১৬ তারিখে মহামান্য রাষ্ট্রপতির আদেশক্রমে কলেজটিকে স্নাতক মানে উন্নীত করা হয়। পরবর্তীতে চট্টগ্রাম মেডিকেল বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়-এর অধিভুক্তি গ্রহণ করে ২০১৭-২০১৮ শিক্ষবর্ষ হতে এক বছরের ইন্টার্নসহ ছয় বছর মেয়াদী বিইউএমএস প্রোগ্রাম চালু করা হয়। কলেজ ক্যাম্পাসটি প্রায় ১৫ বিঘা জায়গা জুড়ে অবস্থিত। কলেজের চারতলা বিশিষ্ট মূল ভবনে ক্লাস, লাইব্রেরি, ল্যাবরেটরি, অফিস কক্ষসহ মোট ৪৫টি কক্ষ রয়েছে। বর্তমান কলেজ ভবনটির ফ্লোর স্পেস প্রায় ৪৩,৯০৮ বর্গফুট এবং ৩৬,৮৪৪ বর্গফুট ফ্লোর স্পেসে হাসপাতালের নির্মাণ কাজ চলছে। কলেজে শিক্ষার্থীদের হাতে কলমে শিক্ষাদানের জন্য ক্যাম্পাস এলাকায় সুবিশাল হার্বাল গার্ডেন, হার্বেরিয়ামসহ অন্যান্য প্রয়োজনীয় উপকরণ রয়েছে। এছাড়া শিক্ষার্থীদের ইন্টার্ন শিক্ষা এবং রোগীদের স্বাস্থ্যসেবার জন্য বর্তমানে একটি ৩০ (ত্রিশ) শয্যার ইউনানী হাসপাতাল চালু রয়েছে। সমন্বিত চিকিৎসাসেবা প্রদানের লক্ষ্যে পর্যায়ক্রমে এটিকে জেনারেল হাসপাতালে রূপান্তর করে আরও সম্প্রসারিত করা হবে। স্বনামধন্য ব্যক্তিদের নিয়ে গঠিত গভর্নিং বডি এবং অভিজ্ঞ শিক্ষক মÐলীর তত্ত¡াবধানে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি পরিচালিত হচ্ছে।
